Does website age influence search engine ranking? For years we were told no, but leaked documents suggest established websites receive a ranking advantage. New websites should not be concerned, however. With the right keyword strategy, even new sites can rank high in search results.

Let me show you how you can accomplish this.

How does website age help your Google ranking?

Before we look at how the right keyword strategy will get your new site to the top of Google, let me first explain why website age can be advantageous for SEO.

Have a greater content library.
have a Search engine history."

More backlinks

Search engines see backlinks as a sign of authority and trust. Backlinks, of course, occur when other websites reference your business with links that lead back to your site. Over time, established websites typically accumulate more backlinks than a newer site would have.

Bigger content library

Older websites often tend to have more pages or articles on their site. This can demonstrate an elevated level of mastery within their niche. Once again, search engines value expertise in content that they share.

Search Engine History

As a website ages, it accumulates data within search engines. This allows Google to have a better understanding of the site’s content and target audience.

Again, this doesn’t mean that new websites cannot reach the top of search pages. It simply highlights the importance of a keyword strategy.

Why new websites need keyword strategies

Keywords are the terms and phrases users type into search engines to find information.

They are the cornerstone of SEO success.

Whether your site is twenty years old or brand new, a good keyword strategy signals to search engines that you offer valuable information in your niche.

How to create a Keyword Strategy for New Websites

Steps to create a keyword strategy...Define your niche.
Define your ideal client.
Brainstorm keywords.
Consider the questions that your ideal client will have?
Create a keyword tree with broad and long-tail keywords.

In order to create a powerful keyword strategy to boost your new website’s visibility make sure to:

  • Clearly define the specific niche or industry that your site caters to. Make sure to understand the broader industry landscape as well you your unique value proposition within that niche.
  • Consider your ideal client. What are their needs, interests, and search behaviour? What are their pain points? What problem do you solve? What questions are they asking about your product or service? By understanding these points, you can begin to tailor your content and keyword strategy to addressing them.
  • Spend time brainstorming relevant keywords. Sit down and create a list of relevant keywords and phrases related to your business. What are the products, services, or information that you offer?
  • What is your ideal client looking for? Again, what do they desire? What result are they looking for? What problems are they trying to solve? What words are they using when they talk about your product or service?
  • Don’t limit your keywords. Create a keyword tree with both broad keywords (more general terms relating to your business) and long-tail keywords (more specific keyword phrases).

How to research keywords

There are many free and paid keyword research tools available to help you build out your keyword tree while showcasing words that will give you the best chance to reach the top of a search engine results page.

  • Google Keyword Planner is a free tool found in Google Ads. It will show you search volume data as well as keyword ideas.
  • Ubersuggest is also a free tool but does offer a paid alternative. It provides keyword suggestions, search volume estimates, and competition analysis. It’s a great starting point for basic keyword research.
  • Ahrefs is a paid tool. It offers a wider range of advanced keyword research capabilities, including competitor keyword analysis, keyword difficulty scores, and estimated search traffic.

Analyze competition levels. Ensure customer relevancy. Prioritize words that are most relevant to your product or service"

After you have created a list of keywords through brainstorming and keyword research, you need to sort out which keywords will offer the best chance for you to reach the top of a search engine results page and reach your ideal clients.

To do this you must first analyze search volumes, competition levels, and the relevance to your website’s content and your target audience.

Next, prioritize keywords that are most relevant to your website’s content and services. Ideally you want to use words that have a high search volume but a low competition level. This is not always possible, so consider long-tail keywords with lower search volumes but also lower competition levels. This can be effective for new websites.

How to use your keywords

How to keywords in your copy: Use keywords naturally in your copy.
Use keywords in your title.
Use keywords in a sub-heading.
Make sure that your keyword is in your URL.

Now that you have a list of keywords that you feel give you the best chance to reach your ideal clients, it is time to integrate them into your website.

Make sure that your keywords maintain a natural reading flow. Remember that whenever you are creating content, Google wants it worded as if you are talking to your best friend.

Relevant keywords must be used in your website titles (H1 tag) and sub-headings (H2, H3 tags). Doing this not only improves readability, but also helps search engine algorithms understand the content’s structure and topic.

Finally, make sure to use your target keywords in the URL of your webpages. It will improve the user experience on your site and help to provide search engines with contextual clues about the page’s content.

Your keyword strategy is an ongoing process

As your website grows and evolves, you will need to revisit your keyword strategy.

Every 4-6 months, take some time to look at how your pages are performing. Check places like Google Search Console to see which keywords are being used when people find your website.

Analyze the data, monitor user behavior, and adapt your keyword selection as needed.

Regularly refreshing your keyword strategy ensures your website remains competitive and continues to target the most relevant search terms for your target audience.

Remember that building a strong keyword strategy is an essential weapon in your SEO arsenal—especially if you have a new website.

Spend time understanding user intent and implementing targeted keywords strategically. This will allow your website to more easily compete for top ranking spots on a search engine results page regardless of age.

Providing valuable content and signaling relevance to search engines will build your website’s authority and create a strong foundation for long-term SEO success.
