  • What is your ideal client looking for? Again, what do they desire? What result are they looking for? What problems are they trying to solve? What words are they using when they talk about your product or service?
  • Don’t limit your keywords. Create a keyword tree with both broad keywords (more general terms relating to your business) and long-tail keywords (more specific keyword phrases).

There are many free and paid keyword research tools available to help you build out your keyword tree while showcasing words that will give you the best chance to reach the top of a search engine results page.

  • Google Keyword Planner is a free tool found in Google Ads. It will show you search volume data as well as keyword ideas.
  • Ubersuggest is also a free tool but does offer a paid alternative. It provides keyword suggestions, search volume estimates, and competition analysis. It’s a great starting point for basic keyword research.
  • Ahrefs is a paid tool. It offers a wider range of advanced keyword research capabilities, including competitor keyword analysis, keyword difficulty scores, and estimated search traffic.

How to choose the right keywords

After you have created a list of keywords through brainstorming and keyword research, you need to sort out which keywords will offer the best chance for you to reach the top of a search engine results page and reach your ideal clients.  

To do this you must first analyze search volumes, competition levels, and the relevance to your website’s content and your target audience.

Next, prioritize keywords that are most relevant to your website’s content and services. Ideally you want to use words that have a high search volume but a low competition level. This is not always possible, so consider long-tail keywords with lower search volumes but also lower competition levels. This can be effective for new websites.
